What is VoIP?
VoIP is the Voice over Internet Protocol (pronounced voyp). VoIP basically covers the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network.
Voice over IP protocols carry telephony signals as digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques, encapsulated in a data packet stream over IP.
VoIP can facilitate:
- The transmition of more than one telephone call down the same broadband-connected telephone line.
- Features such as Call Forwarding, Automatic Redial, Caller ID and 3 way calling at no extra cost.
- The encryption of telephone conversations easily and effectively.
- The retrieval of calls from any location (location independant) where the is an internet connection.
- The introducion and use of other services available over the Internet, including video conversation, message or data file exchange in parallel with the conversation, audio conferencing, managing address books etc.

Analogue vs ISDN.
ISDN is not only faster than a traditional line with an analogue modem, but it also has several capabilities not feasible with standard lines and modems.
Some of the Benefits of ISDN include:
- Direct Dialling in (DDI) - Callers dial a number and are directed to a particular extension via a switch.
- Caller Line identification (CLI) - An extension on the switch can 'see' the name / number of the outside caller
- Trunk to Trunk Transfer (TTT) - An extension can transfer an incoming call back down the PSTN.
- Speedy Calling - You get a quicker connection.
- Voicemail - An extension can transfer calls to voice 'mail boxes' that can be externally retrievesd.
- Digital Network - ISDN offers high speed data capabilities.
- Reduced Overheads - An ISDN switch offers cheaper running costs through high speed data transfer & call management.
